Privacy policy

General principles

Barclays is committed to keeping your information private. By ‘your information’ we mean any information about you that you or third parties provide to us. This policy relates to the privacy of your information at www.barclays.co.uk. The Barclays Group’s Privacy Principles explain how we will handle your information – and they’re below.

Customers

If you are a personal customer of Barclays Bank plc, the way in which information about you is held and used is described in section 10 of our Customer Agreement (or the terms and conditions of the account/s you hold with Barclays if they differ from the Retail Customer Agreement). If you are a business customer, an authorised person on a business account, a user of our electronic banking services or a customer of any other Barclays Group company (for example Barclays Insurance Services Company Ltd or Barclays Stockbrokers Ltd), the terms and conditions of your account/s and agreement terms together with any authority you have given Barclays will inform you how those group companies will hold and use your information.

Online services

1. Information we collect
If you register to use our secure services such as online banking we will ask you to provide some information about yourself for security, identification and verification purposes.

When completing any online forms, we will tell you how your information will be used in relation to the product or service you are applying for, within the form and in any associated terms and conditions.

Where you provide information about others (eg. for joint accounts or if you are "recommending a friend") you must ensure that you have their consent or are otherwise entitled to provide this information to us.

2. How we use your information
We and other members of the Barclays Group will use your information to inform you by letter, telephone, text (or similar) messages, digital television, email and other electronic methods about products and services (including those of others) that may be of interest to you. You may tell us at any time if you don’t want to receive marketing communications from us and/or other members of the Barclays Group by writing to us providing your full name, address and account details.

We may also use your information for research and statistical analysis with the aim of improving our services.

We may pass your information collected online to people who provide a service to us or are acting as our agents, on the understanding that they will keep the information confidential. If we transfer your information to an agent or service provider located in another country, we will make sure that they agree to apply the same levels of protection as we are required to apply to your information and to use your information strictly in accordance with our instructions.

We will retain information collected about you online for as long as permitted for legitimate business purposes.

3. Use of cookies

Cookies are harmless text files that web servers can store on your computer’s hard drive when you visit a website. They allow the server to recognise you when you revisit. There are two main types:
Transient (or per-session) cookies. These only exist for the duration of your site visit and are deleted on exit. They recognise you as you move between pages, for example recording the items you add to an online shopping basket. These cookies also help maintain security.

Persistent (or permanent) cookies. These stay on your machine until they expire or are deleted. Many are built with automatic deletion dates to help ensure your hard drive doesn’t get overloaded. These cookies often store and re-enter your login information, so you don’t need to remember membership details.

We use both types of cookie.

Additionally, cookies can be first- or third-party cookies. First-party cookies are owned and created by the website you’re viewing. Third-party cookies are owned and created by an independent company, usually a company providing a service to the owners of the website.

What we use cookies for

Internet cookies are common and do not harm your system – they just store or gather site information. They help you do things online, like remembering login details so you don’t have to re-enter them when revisiting a site.

We use cookies to:

Gather customer journey information across our sites

Ensure your privacy in our secure sites

Store login details for our secure sites

Temporarily store input information in our calculators, tools, illustrations and demonstrations. Store details of your marketing, product and business unit preferences to improve our targeting and enhance your journey through our sites and partner sites

Evaluate our sites’ advertising and promotional effectiveness (we own the anonymous data collected and don’t share it with anyone)

We use both our own (first-party) and partner companies’ (third-party) cookies to support these activities.

We don’t use cookies to track people’s Internet usage after leaving our sites and we don’t store personal information in them that others could read and understand. We will not sell or distribute cookie information without your prior consent.

Services requiring enabled cookies

Alternatively, an external resource is available at All about cookies (Link opens in a new window) providing specific information about cookies and how to manage them 1.

Please note that if you set your browser to disable cookies, you may not be able to access secure areas of this website, for example any online accounts you may hold.

Secure online services

Any secure online services you subscribe to may use cookies to enable information about you and your preferences to be stored and to prevent unauthorised access to your services and information. Cookies must usually be accepted in such circumstances; without them we cannot ensure your information is secure. People who reject cookies can’t use these services.
